One of the key findings of our research on small business is that more and more industries are developing a barbell like industrial structure. This structure consists a few giant corporations on one end, a shrinking number of mid-sized corporations and a large and growing number of small businesses balancing the other end.
The recent USDA farm census shows the same structure is emerging in farming. Key quote from the press release on the farm census:
"The latest census figures show a continuation in the trend towards more small and very large farms and fewer mid-sized operations."
