eMarketer is reporting that the number of baby boomers using Facebook increased 107% from 2008 to 2009 and Twitter usage jumped 714%. The chart below, from an eMarketer email, shows the growth for a number of social networking sites.
Other interesting observations about this data include:
- There are about 78 million baby boomers, so almost 30% of all baby boomers are on Facebook. This is an impressive number and reinforces our view that Facebook may be taking over the Web.
- I'm not surprised to see Myspace losing visitors, but I am a bit surprised that 16 million baby boomers visited the site in 2008.
- LinkedIn continues to grow (not sure why they don't have 2008 data). Our research indicates that baby boomers see LinkedIn as the site for business networking.
- Not sure why the total baby boomer Internet audience would fall 12% from 2008 to 2009. We will look into this.

This doesn't really surprise me as the baby boomer generation would have been one of the first to truly except using the telephone for socializing. Now that this generation are of retirement age they have plenty of time to use the Internet and would have had to use computers in the work environment and can use them well.
Also the fact that families now tend to live further away from each other websites like Facebook and Twitter allow Grandparents to keep in touch with the kids and grand children on a regular basis.
