Steve Rubel's Facebook Could Eat the Web expands on a theme we've been examining over the last 6 months or so, which we call Is Facebook Taking Over the Web? Since Steve is a communications professional, it's not surprising his title is better.
For those not familiar with Steve, he is an SVP at the giant PR firm Edelman and one of the most influential and thoughtful thinkers on the impact of social media and connective technologies on communications, media and marketing. Key quote from his post:
"In short, I believe Facebook is unstoppable. They aren't just the next Google. They're the next web."
Steve's post provides a lot of information supporting these statements and is well work reading.
A few months ago we suggested that most small businesses do not yet need a Facebook presence, but they should start to explore and experiment with it.
With an estimated 700,000 small businesses on Facebook today, it is clear that the platform is working for many - especially consumer-based businesses.
So let us update our advice: If your business is not on Facebook or experimenting with it, you should be.
