Entrepreneur's Daily Dose blog has a list of 6 retail trends for 2011. The trends are:
- Global Retailing
- Going Green
- Going Mobile
- Local Relevance
- Social Networking
- Shrinking Assortments
That both global and local made the list caught my eye. It seems a bit of a paradox, but I agree that retailing - and business in general - is increasingly global and local. I also like their description of the local relevance trend:
"If you're not expanding worldwide, you'd better be tightly focused on meeting the specific needs of customers in your local market. It's the edge independents can use against larger chains."

Shrinking assortments...I guess the retailer has yet to figure out how to utilize and profit off of the "Long Tail". My guess would be continued growth in online retail.

I have the same guess, online retailing is going strong nowadays. It will definitely grow.
