The article Write for BetaNews really caught my eye because it so matter of factly lays out the realities of the New Normal job market.
BetaNews is looking to hire writers and they have 3 classes of jobs - traditional, freelance and unpaid. Key quote from the article:
We're hiring and taking on new freelancers and other writers. You could be among them. Paid and unpaid writing positions are available. Staff positions are paid BetaNews employees. Freelancers don't directly work for us but receive payment for their work. Unpaid writers typically receive compensation other ways, such as increasing their profile for personal or business gain.
Not surprisingly, it looks like they have only have 1-2 traditional job openings, but "would like to greatly expand the number of paid and unpaid non-staff writers contributing to BetaNews."
This is the growing reality of the job market. Firms of all sizes are hiring more contingent workers and fewer traditional employees. And in a growing number of fields, they are increasingly using unpaid contributors.
Please don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing BetaNews. It's a good site that we regularly follow. Just the opposite, I applaud them for being so straight forward and transparent about their hiring plans.

Yes, this is the new normal--- but honestly, doing a little bit of unpaid writing work is a great way to build an online portfolio and presence. I typically recommend that new writers start their own blog--they will not make money with it in the beginning, but it will build over time.
