Mobile computing device penetration rates continue to expand.
As the chart below from BI Intelligence (paid subscription required) shows, US smartphone penetration is now 72%, up from 65% this time last year. Also, tablet penetration is now at 33%.
This is leading to an explosion in the use of digital data by mobile devices. According to BI Intelligence, the average mobile device user uses a bit over 2 gigabytes of digital data each month. This is up from around 1 gigabyte a year ago.
Mobile data usage will continue to grow at a rapid clip, driven by:
- Continued smartphone growth: over 90% of new cellphones sold in the U.S. are smartphones.
- Cheaper data plans: the cost of mobile data has fallen by about 77% over the past year and will continue to fall due to mobile phone carrier competition.
- Non-cell phone mobile device (tablets, wearables, connected cars, etc.) growth will drive more usage of digital data
