Forbes covers the move from big corporations to freelance work in "A Freelancer's Survival Guide." Key quote on big companies laying off employees:
"U.S. corporations are chopping heads right and left--438,000 in the last six months, sending the unemployment rate to 5.5%, the highest since October 2004."
Forbes suggests that many of these will join the growing numbers of US freelancers. The article goes on to provide a list of issues that new freelancers should be aware of when starting a new small business.
Economic downturns and periods of economic uncertainty often lead to increased small business formation as workers turn to entrepreneurship as an alternative to a traditional job. With technology making it easier and cheaper to start a small or personal business, many displaced corporate employees will choose to do so in 2008 - which is why this is on our 2008 Top Small Business Trends list.
