I posted earlier today on the shipping industry referring to containers as reefers. APL (a big shipping company) reefer expert Mike Zampa has informed me that only refrigerated containers are called reefers. It is an industry term that comes from shortening the word refrigerated. Non-refrigerated containers are called dry containers.
While he didn't say this, his tone indicated he gets this question a lot.
Refrigerated trucks are also commonly called reefers in the supply chain industry.
