Interesting report from Accenture on U.S. consumer use of electronic products and services. One of the highlights for me is the number of Americans who are not actively using things like blogs, social media, mobile email, etc.
As the chart below (from the report) shows, most Americans do not participate in a wide number of online activities.
These numbers are not surprising given home Internet and broadband penetration rates. According to Pew Internet only 63% of American adults have broadband access in their home and 21% of American adults do not have home Internet access at all.
While online participation rates are growing for most online activities, it is important for small businesses to keep in mind a large percentage of Americans are not heavy users of the Internet at home.
It would be interesting to see what these numbers look like in a survey universe of small or microbusiness owners. There are an awful lot of small business owners online and, a couple of years ago, JupiterResearch found that microbusiness owners use the Internet more than anybody -- either on the consumer side or the business side.
