If you want to be depressed, read The Atlantic's How the New Jobless Era Will Transform America. Their description of the article is:
"The Great Recession may be over, but this era of high joblessness is probably just beginning. Before it ends, it will likely change the life course and character of a generation of young adults. It will leave an indelible imprint on many blue-collar men. It could cripple marriage as an institution in many communities. It may already be plunging many inner cities into a despair not seen for decades. Ultimately, it is likely to warp our politics, our culture, and the character of our society for years to come."
Like all Atlantic Monthly articles, it is extremely well written with lots of compelling data from a variety of excellent sources.
While the article highlights many of the issues we see as part of our "end of men" trend, it is not just about the problems the recession is causing for men. It covers the a broader set of societal problems that may be caused by the economic shifts that are occurring.
While we are more optimistic about the future, we do agree with much of the article's content. In particular, we agree that unemployment will likely stay relatively high for the next couple of years.
It's a long article, but worth reading.
