Over 250 U.S. Coworking Facilities

As part of our broader project on coworking, we recently conducted a count of U.S. coworking facilities.  As of the end of August, we found 226 office-based coworking facilities in operation in the U.S. 

We also found 28 shared "industrial coworking" facilities that met our coworking list requirements.  These are shared workshops that cater - at least in part - to inventors, entrepreneurs and small businesses.  Tech Shop is a good example of an industrial coworking facility. 

This count highlights the substantial growth of the coworking movement, which began a little over 5 years ago.  It also illustrates how coworking has moved beyond the office to include industrial facilities and other types of shared workspaces. 

As the chart below shows, the number of U.S. coworking facilities has increased by almost 60% over the last year and a half.  This despite a very tough economic climate.

To make our list, facilities needed to meet the following requirements:

1. self-identify as providing coworking space
2. offer a range of membership options
3. offer community space and/or activities
4. have coworking as an important part of the facility offering
5. cater to those using the facility for work-related purposes
6. be active

To identify the spaces we conducted Internet searches, reviewed sites and services providing coworking facilitity listings and interviewed coworking facility owners and others connected to the coworking community.  We interviewed coworking facilitiy managers and owners as needed to verify information. 

We also involved the Coworking Google Group in our research and released a draft facility list to the group.  Their input was invaluable to our work and we thank them for their guidance and feedback. 

Over the coming months we will continue on research on coworking and the future of the workplace.  We will, of course, continue to report our finding on this blog and on our coworking project blog.

Interesting! We are a CPA firm out of Greenville, SC starting to serve Creatives across the country. We are trying to develop our firm to serve these Creatives as a main focus of our firm. It's fun, and these folks are innovative! And now we have a Co-work entity as a client.

We are considering serving the accounting/tax needs of these legal Coworking entities across the US for a free exchange of advertising to their members. Hmmm...
