Newsweek has followed up on their downer article on the economic outlook for men - Dead Suit Walking - with a very upbeat article on women's future economic prospects.
Women Will Rule the World covers the drivers of growth behind what we like to call the trend towards a She-conomy. Key quote from the article:
"... economists predict that by 2024, the average woman in the U.S. and a number of rich European countries will outearn the average man."
The article covers much of the same ground as our She-conomy forecast from last year. A combination of education gains by women coupled with economic growth shifting to women-oriented industries is driving the she-conomy in the U.S. and overseas.
The broader shift to knowledge industries and towards more collaborative work environments is also favoring women over men.
The article has an interesting "lies, damned lies and statistics" example. It uses the discredited statistic that women control 83% of consumer purchases. That stat was made up years ago and became "common knowledge." It's quoted a lot (yes, we used to use it), but the real number is likely between 50% and 60%.
Intuit has a micro-site on the She-conomy. It has more information and several videos on this trend.
