The growth of the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, China and India) has been dramatic over the last decade. It's hard to overstate how much global economic change has occurred due these countries and especially China and India.
Many other countries are starting to grow economically. CIVETS is a term coined by HSBC (a very large global bank) to describe some of the new emerging markets. The CIVETS are: Colombia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Egypt, Turkey and South Africa.
Keeping up with all these countries is tough. Which is why I'm very excited about a new blog - Beyond BRICs - from the Financial Times (FT). For those not familar with the FT, it is a London based competitor to the Wall Street Journal and a high quality publication.
While the bog is new, they already have some great articles. For example 1-Million Plus Cities has some greate charts and points out that in 2025 the world is expected to have 546 cities with over 1 million residents. In 1950 there were only 75.
In addition to quality reporting, one of the reasons we follow the FT is their European perspective. It's good to see how the rest of the world is seeing things.
