"U.S. Smartphone penetration continued to grow in July 2012, with 55.5 percent of mobile subscribers in the U.S. now owning smartphones. This is a significant increase compared to July 2011 when only 41 percent of mobile subscribers owned smartphones."
Not much of a surprise, but it's always good to have the numbers.
Young adults are leading the way in Smartphone ownership with 74 percent of 25-34 year olds now owning smartphones, up from 59 percent in July 2011.
Teens are also rapidly moving to Smartphones, with 58% of those aged 13 to 17 saying they own a Smartphone. This is up from 36% in 2011.
As chart below (also from Nielsen) shows, Android phones continue to dominate in unit market share, followed by Apple's IOS. Other operating systems are really just a blip at this point.
