The BLS recently released a report showing that the college education gap between women and men continues to widen. According to the report, by age 25 30 percent of women and just 22 percent of men had received a bachelor’s degree.
Also, about the same percentage of women (14%) and men (13%) are enrolled in college at age 25. Since women tend to finish college at higher rates than men, its' likely this gap will widen a bit for this group in the coming years.
The relative under performance by men in educational settings is well established. It starts in elementary school and widens as kids age. Currently about 57% of all college students are women and this percentage is expected to grow to 60% by 2019.
This data is another sign boys and men are struggling. Whether it's addiction rates, incarceration rates or education rates, I don't see how you can look at the data without coming to the conclusion boys and many men are in trouble.
That depends on your view of higher education.
Unless you actually need the degree for a professional certification - such as in medicine or law, then I believe a university degree from anything but an Ivy League isn't worth the paper its printed on.
If you had that belief, then you could interpret the data as guys simply being smarter than women in this case :)
Great blog by the way though. Been reading for a while.
