Fiverr, the online marketplace for people to buy and sell services for $5, recently announced a new platform to better support the "gig economy".
The new platform includes a visually oriented design scheme as well as a number of new analytical tools that allow gig sellers to better manage their Fiverr related business activities.
Most interesting is a new focus on supporting small business micro-task buyers. Key quote from Fiverr's CEO in a Next Web article on the new platform:
“Small businesses are thriving because of the services they’re finding from our users,” he continues. “This is our passion at Fiverr – helping people make money on their own terms, and to have fun while they’re at it. The new Fiverr is a reflection of the shift from an outdated work model to the new entrepreneur. We will continue to follow this passion and drive this movement forward.”
This follows the release of Task Rabbit for Businesses a few months ago. This is a new Task Rabbit site designed to help companies hire temporary workers for jobs that will span over multiple days, weeks, or months.
These moves come as no surprise. Online talent marketplaces like Elance and oDesk have seen substantial growth over the past couple of years. This, coupled with much higher average transaction prices than micro-gigs, makes this market very attractive to firms like Fiverr and Task Rabbit.
For small businesses and sellers of gigs this is good news. Small businesses get yet another contingent talent source; sellers of gigs get a bigger market with higher gig rates.
