The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday on U.S. Census data showing that for the first time in modern history more white Americans are dying than being born.
The chart on the right is from the article.
The data comes from a new report from the Census. A few other interesting data points are:
- The nation's total minority population increased by 1.9 percent in 2012 to 116 million, or about 37 percent of the total U.S. population.
- The Hispanic population grew by 2.2 percent to just over 53 million in 2012, or about 17 percent of the total population.
- The population of children younger than 5 is close to becoming majority-minority nationally, standing at 49.9 percent minority in 2012.
The U.S. is rapidly shifting from being a white majority country to a country where minorities are the majority.
The crossover point when minorities outnumber whites in the U.S. will likely be sometime between 2035 and 2040.
