I did an interview with the folks at Zen99 last week. Zen99 is a Y-Combinator backed startup that provides tax and insurance tools for independent contractors.
They also offer advice through online guides at Zen99 University, which is where the interview appeared.
The interview covered a lot of ground related to the growing freelance economy.
But based on the parts they highlighted, the folks at Zen99 seemed to find the following points of most interest. My answers are in italics:
1. The number of independent workers in America.
There are about 18 million Americans who regularly work 15 or more hours in an average work week as an independent worker.
2. The factors that result in independent workers being highly satisfied and that independent work satisfaction is not strongly correlated with income.
In other words, low to moderate income independent workers (those with annual incomes of less than $25,000 per year) who report having work autonomy, control and flexibility are just as satisfied and happy as independent workers who earn more than $100,000 per year.
3. The need for greater protections for independent workers.
The shift to independent work means more and more Americans are being left without the protections and programs needed to be successful and safe in the new economy.
4. The growing issues around employee misclassification.
We think the next couple of years will be a great time to be a labor lawyer.
