Data Sheds New Light on the On-Demand Economy, from Intuit's Alex Chriss, summarizes recent research from Intuit and Emergent Research on the motivations, attitudes and activities of on-demand economy (ODE) workers.
The research is based on a survey of independent workers that work with 11 different on-demand economy and online talent marketplace companies (see this Intuit press release for the companies and more details).
Three of the key findings from this research are:
1. On-demand economy workers mostly work part-time: as the chart below from Intuit's study SlideShare presentation shows, most ODE workers work part-time with ODE platforms and marketplaces.
Highlighting this, 43% of those working in the on-demand even report having a full (29%) or part-time (14%) traditional job. This is part of the broader trend towards people having multiple streams of income instead of just one "job".
This finding is important because much of the debate around on-demand economy jobs focuses on the small minority of people who are working full-time in the on-demand economy.
Our research indicates the motivations, attitudes and needs of the part-timers are different than the full-timers. This is getting lost due to the focus on the full-timers.
2. Most ODE workers are satisfied with their work: this research finding is consistent with the findings of many other studies.
In fact, I'm not aware of study that doesn't find most independent workers are satisfied with their work - and, on average, more satisfied with their work than those with traditional jobs.
But despite this, many still believe independent workers and/or ODE workers aren't satisfied.
3. Most ODE workers plan to continue with their ODE work: Very few (3%) report they definitely will not continue with ODE work
See Intuit's Dispatches from the New Economy: The On-Demand Workforce on SlideShare for more study data and charts.
Intuit will be releasing additional data from this study in January.
