From coworking spaces with TV studios or biolabs, to spaces that target lawyers or musicians, there's a wide and growing range of niche coworking spaces.
Allwork's 15 Niche Flexible Workspaces You Need To Follow covers, well, 15 of them.
All the spaces listed are interesting, but a couple jumped out at us:
- Chicago's Coalition focuses on the energy and cleantech industries.
- London's Edspace targets firms and individuals working in education.
- Manchester’s Orega has a membership mostly come from the media world.
Not in the article but long one of our favorite niche coworking chains is Satellite Workspace Centers. They have spaces in the deep suburbs of the San Francisco bay area.
They also have a partnership with Community Television (CTV) of Santa Cruz. This partnership provides their members access to a professional digital media studio (see pictures below).
This means their members can easily and cheaply make their own high quality TV shows, films and radio/podcast programs.
It's also is another example of the shift to variable cost services and business models.
We've long tracked the growth of niche coworking spaces. The reason is growing numbers of niche spaces is a key indicator that coworking is growing and spreading across the economy.
The growth of niche spaces is one reason we felt coworking had hit a growth inflection point in 2011 and why we reported it had entered the mainstream in 2016.
WeWork and other "big coworking" spaces tend to attract most of the attention. But the continued rise of niche spaces clearly indicates that coworking and the workspace-as-a-service industry is here to stay.
