According to data from the U.S, Census 2016 Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs (the most recent data available), the median U.S. employer small business (those with paid traditional employees) generated less than $400k in revenue in 2016.
Our title includes the word "still" because we posted on this data back in 2016, when 2014 data was most recent available.
An alert reader asked if there was more recent data. And as the chart below shows, there is.
But it hasn't changed much in the past two years.
The median small business still had receipts of about $390,000 in 2016 and about 4 in 10 (39%) had less than $250,000. Only about one quarter (27%) of small businesses generated more than $1 million in revenue.
